Finally Understand Programming Feb 06, 2006
By Dwayne Hawthorne After trying a few different books, I found this to be a very comprehensive and easy to understand, unlike some others.
It took me step by step through the project and allowed me to create something that actually works and allowed me to understand what I was actually doing.
If your just starting out in programming, I'd recommend you give this book a try. You won't regret it.

Was disappointed Jun 26, 2006
By Mercedes I'm not brand new to programming, I have done lots of programming in Excel and Access, just never used actual Visual Basic. I bought this book hoping for guideance in VB 2005 Express. The first part of the book is ok, no trouble following the examples, but as the Personal Organizer application/database became more complex, I started to get lost. The code didn't always work, the samples don't work, constant errors that it can't find the database. When in doubt of the code I entered I would copy the authors code and still it wouldn't work. It felt like there were a couple steps missing here and there. This is very frustrating to me. Also, the example code should work when loaded from the disc, when it doesn't it's more frustrating. The SQL section is ok, again seems a bit vague to me. I have since moved onto Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Step by Step by Michael Halvorson and am having no trouble at all, not feeling lost anymore. And the examples actually work!

I Like His Approach and His Writing Style Mar 13, 2006

Unlike a lot of books that jump right into programming, the firs thing that I liked about this book was that it took just a few pages to explain where VB came from, why it's a suitable language for a beginner, and so on. After that, it takes the CD included with the book and uses it to load the software you will be using. That way, first, you're not stumbling around the Microsoft web site looking for what you should download, and second, you're working with the same edition of everything that he is using in the illustrations so you're not always making allowances for having something different on your screet.
After that I liked his approach of starting with a simple program (Hello World, what else?) so that you have something running almost immediately. From there you increase your program one step at at a time until you are working with the complete language.
Is the best of all books on VB? I don't know, I haven't read them all. But this is a good one, I happened to like his writing style and the way he presented what I wanted to know. There were a couple of typos I spotted, but they were easy to see as typos and caused me no problems.

Beginners beware!!! Jul 11, 2006

Pros:
Probably the most ambitious of the books I have seen for VB 2005 Express. If you can follow along through this, you would have a good idea of its capabilities.
Cons:
In parts, seriously lacking in explanation of code - as if it started out as a typical 600 page Wrox book, then got pared down, with a lot of explanations culled.
Despite what it says on the back cover, absolutely NOT for first time, beginning programmers. Language coverage is too sparse.
Summary:
Buy if you want a challenge (I was lucky in that I did have some Excel VBA experience). Rank beginners, avoid absolutely.

The Ultimate Guide for a Beginner Feb 06, 2006
By Sophia C Stepping into the world of programming was like entering a scary new land filled with inhabitants speaking a language I couldn't understand. It was daunting! This wasn't helped by the fact that the other book i purchased was about as helpful was a map of middle earth in elvish.
Wrox's Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition Starter Kit however, held my hand through the whole process of getting acquainted with programming. I certainly don't feel like a pro yet, but this book has helped me to bridge that vital gap and take the first step towards becoming a programming pro! I now feel comfortable with basic programming concepts such as XML parsing, whereas before this book i had no clue!
Highly recommended - if you're a beginner, this is the book for you!
