A Standard May 18, 2008
5 stars plus for performance!!!!
3 stars for a very average remastering!

Familiar classic material, Tchaikovsky's most well-known ballet suites, one of the world's most recognized conductor, and the Berlin Philharmonic provide lush, beautiful, lively performances of works that are an essential part of a serious classical music collection.

This is a fine recording to represent those much honored lovely ballets. Is this the ultimate performance, maybe not. Simply for the extra realism of a modern digital recording, I might go with Tchaikovsky: Ballet Suites For some reason, the Karajan performance is a little pricey for an older performance that should have been part of DG's wonderful "Originals" series.

The Karajan performance is the one that introduced me to these works on LP 35 years ago. They're just as lovely today, but comparing this side-by-side to Levine I hear a good not great remastering job of a fine analog source compared to a state-of-the-art digital recording. I'd hope perhaps DG will go back to the masters and try again with newer, better technology. This timeless performance deserves the TLC of the best engineering can do with it.

Fabulous Performances of Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty Suites Aug 12, 2005
Von Karajan is available on another CD with the Vienna instead of the Berlin. Both are wonderful choices in this music. This performance of the Swan and the Sleeping Beauty excerpts/suites show von Karajan at his best. If you are not a von Karajan fan you may be surprised at how impressive he is in the ballet music. The music itself is beyond praise. I am not so convinced by the Nutcracker performance on this issue - but it's difficult to imagine surpassing the two other suites, so you might consider the famous Christmas music a nice bonus.
