Well-prepared sampler of Mozart musical jewels Dec 13, 2011
By Spaceneedleboy This album compilation dates back to 1969, and features some choice morsels of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's creative works. The producers did a fine job of compiling these tracks from top-drawer performances in the late 1960s Columbia Masterworks catalog, which are summarized herewith:
Andante from Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major - "Elvira Madigan" Theme. An elegant and richly rewarding rendition by Robert Casadesus accompanied by the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell.
Overture to The Marriage of Figaro. This is a very energetic yet meticulous reading by the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell.
Piano Sonata No. 15 in C, first movement. Glenn Gould sparkles with animation and rhythmic energy as he interprets this selection.
Divertimento No. 17 in D, third movement menuetto. Here the Cleveland Orchestra is conducted by its then-associate conductor Louis Lane in a stylish rendition of this movement.
Piano Sonata No. 11 in A, Rondo Alla Turca. Philippe Entremont provides a buoyant and energized account of this selection.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The tonal richness of the string section of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy stands out, along with sensible pacing. Devotees of "historically informed performances" on vintage original instruments may be a bit underwhelmed, but many listeners will be charmed by this "big band" reading of the piece.
Don Giovanni - Minuet. Ormandy conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra in a solid, finessed reading of this short selection.
Variations on "Ah! Vous Dirai-Je, Maman!". This track was the major reason I purchased this CD (which I previously owned on vinyl and even on 8-track tape) - Andre Previn's witty and fun reading of this keyboard piece.
In summary, this album makes a nice introduction to Mozart's work for neophyte listeners, as well as a pleasant sampler CD to play in the car or as background music while entertaining. The performances are very good, and will likely motivate you to explore more of Mozart's amazing musical works.
