My favorite :) Aug 13, 2010 Most everyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with Little Women. It is my favorite book (I don't dare to review THAT because I know I will rant on and on about its awesomeness and bore everyone to tears), I wrote all my college essays about its impact on me and I've read it about three or four times a year since I was nine, so I may be a bit biased in saying this is the best film I've ever seen, but hear me out...
First of all, I think the casting was almost perfect, especially with Winona Ryder as Jo, Christian Bale as Laurie, and Susan Sarandon as Marmee (though I was somewhat traumatized after I saw her in the Rocky Horror Picture Show a few years after I first viewed this film): they were very believable in their roles and they made me laugh, listen carefully to their words of wisdom, and cry when they experienced hardship. Secondly, the plot moves fast but doesn't miss capturing the spirit of the scenes that echo those from the book (ex: Jo's anger after discovering Amy has burned her manuscript). Thirdly, the necessity of deleting some of the book's content carried out by the film makers didn't seem off-putting at all to me -- very few scenes that I really admired were passed over. Fourth, the edition of new content was enjoyable (Ex: couples kissing tenderly or passionately rather than hinting darkly of romance in such a way that the reader doesn't always know how far the feelings run -- one thing that always bothered me was the lack of courtship between John and Meg before she accepted his proposal: she seemed to enjoy rejecting him too much at first to have feelings rooted too deep at that point): Louisa May Alcott's book was largely autobiographical and she based Jo off of her own experiences, so the idea of having this Jo write her experiences into a novel entitled Little Women seemed perfect in my eyes.
I see that some reviewers seem to prefer the earlier adaptations of the novel: personally this is the only one I've ever seen, though if I had a chance (or the funds) to get my hands on the others I'd snap them up in a second: hard to imagine the film any better, but I am totally open to possibilities.

I love this movie Apr 25, 2010 I know this movie is a period piece and I don't usually like movies like that, but I love this movie! It's so good and well-acted and cute and sweet and well-done. I love Little Women. I love the story of four sisters growing up in Civil War New England. I love Jo, Winona's character who is headstrong and smart and a tomboy and who longs to be a writer and who finally makes her dreams come true in the end. She's so amazing as Jo, she makes her come to life and she brings depth and chrisma and genuiness and sweetness and spunk to the character. She plays her very honestly and she is so good as a writer. She's amazing and deserves an Oscar. This movie is a good family movie, and it's very well-done and it's a good movie. I loved all the girls in it, they each did a wonderful job. I think Susan Sarandon was a little rusty, but she delivers a good performance. I liked Christian Bale as Laurie, he was a good decent young man and a good person and he played his character very well. I loved Kirsten Dunst who is spirited and positive and has an confidence and an air to her as Amy, the golden girl who is ambitious and well-bred and wants to be an arist and marry a wealthy man and who is one of the most elegant and heartfelt of the bunch. Claire Danes is so good as the sweet, shy Beth and I liked the older actress who played Meg. I loved this movie, I watch it over and over again until I get sick of it which is never. I think this is a fine family film and an postive and uplifting and well-made movie. I liked how they each grew up and went their own way in life, and married men whom they loved even if it wasn't for money and how they made careers for themselves and yet still has self-respect and how they listened to their mother's advice over their youthful years and still used it in everyday life. This movie has so much and it's something little girls will love, they'll adore the realionship between Jo and the professor and Jo is a good role model who goes after what she wants in life and finally at the end writes a truthful and well-written book about her life and her sisters. The book gets published and she gets married, happily. This movie is such a classic and though it's not like the book, it's still an wonderful movie. I love Winona Ryder too, she's my favorite actress and so beautiful and talented and she's great as Jo. Her best role ever.
Little Women Apr 07, 2010 Very well done. Jo has much more depth than the silly older version with Katherine Hepburn. Enjoyed it.
The best of all Little Women films Mar 08, 2010 This film is nothing short of superb. Susan Sarandon is flawless as Marmie, and Winona Ryder is an excellent Jo. Gabriel Byrne is perfect as the professor. The period settings and costumes are authentic (I'm a history teacher) without romanticizing days gone by. Best of all is the film's feminist sensibility. Some have criticized this as a modern overlay on a book from another era, but Louisa May Alcott was very much a feminist; in the Victorian world for which she wrote, it was necessary to soft-pedal her ideas. The film brings them to center stage.
