Beauty in simplicity Mar 02, 2000
I was given this album in exchange for a couple of my university text books. I think the exchange of two boring political strategy books, for this excellent LP was the best deal since a few Dutch men got a bit of land somewhere in America for a few old beads. I have always been a big fan of Bob Dylans, and also the British version, Donavan. So to find such perfect songs as 'Blue Eyed Boy' 'A hard rains a-gonna fall' and 'Colours' given such beautiful treatment has given unadulatrated pleasure. Baez's voice has a purity to it, that when coupled with the simplicity of an accoustic guitar, show just how powerful and beautiful a good voice and a moving tune can be. For proof, just enjoy the title track which showpeices the singers voice and sets the tone for a stunning album.

Pure and beautiful singing Jul 07, 1998
Joan Baez has one of the most beautiful voices ever recorded. Here she demonstrates the soulful, haunting quality of her range, from the lyrical and lilting "Farewell Angelina," to the subtle sacasm of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," to the strong and stirring "Hard Rain Going to Fall." To hear one of the classic folk singers of all time, listen to this album and marvel at a true master of the genre.

Classic Vintage Baez Feb 25, 2000
By Mark R. Thivierge Though her 1968 release, ANY DAY NOW, was her actual Dylan tribute, this classic Baez album contained four of the best Dylan covers of Joan's career. The title song, a gem filled with surrealistic imagery was never even officially recorded by Dylan (though a bootleg does surface from time to time), and "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" is given a near definitive treatment by Joan, her version quite possibly surpassing Dylan's. The other material, including Woodie Guthrie's "Ranger's Command," the traditional "Wild Mountain Thyme", and a German version of "Where Have all the Flowers Gone?" round the album out nicely.

CREAM OF EARLY BAEZ Jun 20, 2001
By Pieter
"Toypom"
This is a great album! I've never been bothered by her German and French accents and I think the songs are superb and sensitively interpreted. It's very folky and Satisfied Mind even sounds a bit country-ish to me, but this album is still a sheer pleasure to listen to. My favourites include Farewell Angelina, Colours, Satisfied Mind, the German version of Where Have All The Flowers Gone? and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. In fact this album is more enjoyable than some of her later "art-song" excursions of the 1980s an early 1990s. If you're looking for good songs well-interpreted, you cannot go wrong with this album. It's a classic.

A GLORIOUS RECORDING... Mar 09, 2004
By Lawyeraau This is an absolutely beautiful recording. Of the eleven tracks, four are Bob Dylan covers, one is a Donovan (Leitch) cover, three are traditional Anglo-American ballads, two are more contemporary folk songs, one of which is Peter Seeger's "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" sung in German, and there even a lovely song that Ms. Baez sings in French.
The Dylan songs are set to great effect by the interpretation given them by Ms. Baez. Clearly, she has a healthy respect for Dylan's songwriting abilities, treating each one of his songs as if it were a jewel and her voice the precious setting into which it is being placed. She does likewise with Donovan's cover song.
The traditional folk ballads are, as always, exquisitely and simply sung by Ms. Baez in her sweet, true, clear soprano. The purists will be more than satisfied by her interpretation of these songs. This is the Joan Baez that first rose to fame and came to the attention of an adoring public.
My favorites on this CD are the Dylan covers, the traditional folk ballads, and the German version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone". This is a must have recording for those who are fans of Ms. Baez and for those who simply love music that is a thing of beauty.
